Turkish Red Poppy (Papaver somniferum) is an annual variety (hardiness zones do not apply) native to Turkey that is a gorgeous red with a basal spot in the center. This is the poppy that gained fame from "The Wizard of Oz," beautiful enough to charm a winged monkey, potent enough to put a lion to sleep. For the wicked witch in all of us, by all means, scatter some seeds.
Poppy seeds, according to classic folklore, can be used to confuse. Sprinkle the seeds around the exterior of your home to confuse spirits of ill will. Poppies are considered useful in spells for fertility, love, money, luck, sleep, and invisibility. Sleeping with a sachet of poppy seeds (you can also use the dried leaves and flowers instead of seed) under your pillow is said to relieve insomnia. Add poppy in a witch's bottle for love to attract love or help you to learn to love yourself. Each color of bloom can enhance a spell using that specific color magick in coordination to the general poppy uses. For example, using a blue poppy in a sleep spell to enhance the calming effects.
Poppy seeds are widely used in Indian culinary dishes and pastries like poppyseed bagels, Papaver somniferum var. album is also grown as an ornamental cultivar. It's healing properties include as a sedative, astringent, expectorant, hypnotic, aphrodisiac, antispasmodic and analgesic.
Cultivation: Spread seed on fast-draining soil in fall or very early spring. For best results, plan the planting of poppies so that they germinate and grow during cool, moist weather, then flower and make seed during hot, dry weather. The plant prefers full sun and highly nitrogenous, fast-draining soil of neutral pH.
