Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca, also known as Honeyweed) is a flowering herbaceous perennial that is hardy in zones 3-8 and otherwise grown as an annual. Motherwort has been used to treat heart conditions, menstrual transitions, promoting inner trust, confidence, and spiritual healing. 
Spiritual and Magickal Usage:
  • Motherwort is said to bring peace to the home, add this to incenses to raise the protection and peace.
  • The essence of motherwort is said to bring a sense of peace and cleansing to the spirit.
  • Add some motherwort strewn around a candle when doing banishing and protection spells.
  • With a branch of motherwort, asperge a room (or people) with blessings for peace and protection before a ritual.
  • Add some motherwort to incense or around your candles for confidence and attraction when manifesting love or money.
Herbal Uses:
  • When added to a tonic, motherwort is said to be useful for tachycardia, anxiety, and tension.
  • Add motherwort to tea to lift the spirits from anxiety.
  • Motherwort is excellent for menstrual transitions, such as when the young woman first starts or at peri-menopause to help alleviate anxiety and depression. It is also said to help with sleep and restlessness that is associated with these conditions.
  • Motherwort can be used when a woman begins labor to ease early labor pains. It can also be used post-natally to help the uterus relax and return to normal. 
This plant prefers partial to full sun, gardening soil and plenty of water. Sow the seeds in fall or early spring, barely covering them with soil and tamping them securely. Keep evenly moist until germination, which should occur in 1-3 weeks. Thin or transplant 1-2 feet apart.
