Mountain arnica (Arnica mountana) is a powerful healing herb and has been used for millenia for bruises, sprains, and other muscle discomfort. Also known as mountain tobacco, it is a clump-forming alpine herbaceous perennial that is native to the mountains of Central Europe. The yellow flowers are large on long, sturdy stalks.

Spiritual and Magickal Uses:
- Add arnica flowers to spells for protection against harmful spirits
- Plant arnica in the garden to protect against lightning, it is useful in weather magick.
- Use arnica in healing rituals.

Herbal Uses:
- While not taken internally, arnica is a potent healer of bruises, sprains, and mild arthritis when applied topically.
- Create soothing balms and topical tinctures by steeping fresh or dried arnica in a carrier oil or alcohol, we also recommend blending with a witch hazel decoction.
-Flowers are used in poultices and salves to treat areas that have unbroken skin.

Mountain arnica is hardy in zones 4 to 9, best at elevations up to 6,000 feet. Press the seeds into spongy potting soil and keep evenly moist until germination. Germination is normally within a couple of weeks. This is a light-dependent germinator, it is best to work up in pots before moving into the garden. Arnica montana makes sturdy clumps in the native habitat and should be planted in moist, acidic soil that receives full sun. There should be one to two feet between plants to accommodate the natural spacing requirements of this plant. This plant prefers moist, lime-free, acidic loam soil in partial shade to full sun. It does well in rock gardens. At low elevations, give moist shade.
