Description

Black Horehound is a herbaceous perennial hardy in zones 5-10, flowering 2-3 feet tall. Horehound often has a negative reputation for being a “stinky” plant that has an odor often compared to sweaty armpits; for that reason it is also known as Stinking Horehound. The pungency of this plant differs from the truly stinky variety Ballota nigra foetida. It is said to promote quick thinking, clear the mind, and strengthen your mental powers.

Spiritual and Magickal Usage:
  • Include horehound in incense for attraction and protection.
  • Add this to a sachet and carry it to protect against spells and sorcery directed at you.
  • Sprinkle this herb (leaf and flowers) at the base of a yellow candle for clarity of mind and strengthening mental powers.
Herbal Uses:
  • Black horehound is said to be a useful anti-emetic and combines well with ginger, raspberry leaf, and chamomile for this purpose.
  • It can be used to treat persistent diarrhea.
  • This herb can be taken for indigestion and minor stomach ailments.
  • Teas made with this, while nasty-tasting, is said to have a mild sedative effect.
Cultivation:
Black horehound prefers full sun in dry to moderately damp soils with an alkaline PH when it can get it. Sow seeds in spring or autumn indoors. The seeds usually germinate in 3-6 weeks. Space these plants 2 feet apart as they become very weedy.
