Chamomile, Dyer's (Anthemis tinctoria) (Golden Marguerite)
Family: Aster (Asteraceae)
Hardiness: All temperate zones
These plants are best known for their inclusion in teas, tinctures and infusions to aid in sleep or provide calm and are often served with either honey or lemon.
Because chamomile can cause uterine contractions which can lead to miscarriage, the U.S. National Institutes for Health says that pregnant and nursing mothers should not consume chamomile.
Cultivation: Hardy perennial to 16 inches, native to Europe. Large, lemon-yellow daisies used to dye wool and as a salutary tea. Plants prefer full sun and regular garden soil--will even naturalize in waste places. Short-lived seed. Sow directly in fall, midwinter, or very early spring in weed-free garden bed.
